Catherine Jenkins

President

Catherine Jenkins has been teaching Professional Communication in both Units 1 and 2 since 2012. As a grad student, she was also a member of Unit 3 for four years, making her aware of the unique concerns of all three bargaining units. An active union member since starting work at TMU, Catherine sat on the Unit 1 bargaining team during the last round of contract negotiations. Subsequently, she was elected VP Campaigns & Equity in 2022 and President in 2023. Catherine is also a long-standing member of The Writers’ Union of Canada, and a past member of USW Local 1998 at the University of Toronto. 

Kelly Train
Kelly Train

VP Unit 1

Kelly Train was first elected to the Unit 1 VP role in 2016. She previously held the positions of VP Campaigns and Equity (2014-2016), Trustee (2009-2012), and Unit 1 Bargaining Committee member (2014-2015). As a Unit VP, Kelly attends hiring meetings, investigates member hiring inquiries, and represents members in meetings with management. She regularly liaises with the Office of the Vice Provost of Faculty Affairs to resolve member issues and potential grievances. In her role, Kelly has also been the Lead Negotiator for the Unit 1 Bargaining Committee (2017-2018, 2021-2022, and in the upcoming 2024 negotiations). Kelly has been a long-standing Unit 1 and 2 member, having taught multiple courses for the Department of Sociology at Toronto Metropolitan University since 2002.

Rob Denning
Rob Denning

VP Unit 2

Rob Denning has been teaching in the Chemistry and Biology department for Unit 2 since 2013 and was elected to the Unit 2 VP position in 2021. Prior to that, he was a Unit 3 member and served on bargaining committees. Rob is also a staff member at TMU, represented by OPSEU Local 596. In 2021, he won the Julia Hanigsberg Make Your Mark Staff Award for his work in adapting augmented reality for lab instruction.

Rebecca Scenna
Rebecca Scenna

VP Unit 3

Rebecca Scenna holds the position of Unit 3 VP.  Through her passion for teaching and fostering a sense of community, Rebecca sought leadership opportunities with CUPE Local 3904 and was elected to her current role in 2023. In this position, she represents Teaching Assistants (TAs) and Graduate Assistants (GAs) in handling issues and inquiries with management. Rebecca is enrolled in the PhD program in the Chemistry and Biology departments.

Richard Deklerk
Richard Deklerk

Treasurer

Richard Deklerk started at CUPE Local 3904 as the volunteer Chair of the Audit Committee in 2012 before being elected Treasurer in 2014. Richard is an accomplished accounting professional with over 25 years of experience as a CFO, VP Finance, and Chief Audit Executive. He is a Certified Public Accountant, Certified General Accountant, Certified Internal Auditor, and a Certified Financial Services Auditor. Richard has been teaching at TMU since 2010 in the fields of accounting, finance, public administration, entrepreneurship, global management, and health management. He holds an MBA and Bachelor of Commerce degrees.

Michael Lapointe
Michael Lapointe

VP Campaigns & Equity

Michael Lapointe has been a Unit 1 member at TMU for the last 11 years, teaching primarily for the School of Professional Communication as well as the Chang School. He has extensive union and committee experience. Michael currently is the CUPE representative on both the Awards Committee and the Curriculum Committee for the School of Professional Communication. In the past, he has volunteered to help CUPE with vote drives by telephoning members and working to better the position of writing instructors. Michael also serves as Treasurer on the Executive Committee for CASDW (Canadian Association for the Study of Discourse and Writing).

Michael Dick
Michael Dick

VP Communications

Michael Dick has served as Vice President of Communications for CUPE Local 3904 since 2020. He was previously a Trustee and a Unit 1 Bargaining Committee member. Michael joined TMU as a Contract Lecturer in 2014 and has taught for nearly a decade in the School of Professional Communication and Continuing Education. He also has experience teaching for several other Ontario colleges and universities and has policy and communications expertise honed through consulting and government work. Michael also works closely on campaigns and labour media initiatives given his academic and practical background in media production.
