Dear Members,
We've all been watching political events unfold south of the Canadian border. At this challenging time, CUPE 3904 advises against non-essential travel to the United States and urges caution for our members who need to travel to the United States.
Precautions are especially relevant for members of our community who are:
- Associated with countries against which the US has a travel ban or where diplomatic tensions are running high
- Researchers or activists whose work or statements might be perceived as anti-American in present circumstances
- Members of minority groups, including 2SLGBTQI+ individuals
The Government of Canada has issued Travel advice and advisories for United States (USA) noting that "US border agents are entitled to search your electronic devices, such as your phones, computers or tablets, when you are entering the United Stated." Refusal may lead to delayed entry or detention.
The Canadian Association of University Teachers CAUT advises academics against non-essential travel to the U.S. | CAUT and has provided a detailed caut-2025_supplement_to_the_caut_advisory_on_travel_to_the_united_states_2025-04_0.pdf for academics considering such travel. CUPE 3904 supports this message from CAUT to protect the safety of our members in the current American political context and to ensure preparation for those who do choose to travel to the United States at this time.
CUPE 3904 recognizes that currency is essential in our competitiveness for work and career development in all Units. While we support member participation at conferences and exhibitions, we encourage members to participate at such events across Canada, in Europe or other jurisdictions outside the United States.
